Hardcore Foamcore
As part of the 'Hardcore Foamcore' competition at SCAD, we made a life sized transportation device inspired by a horse & country music using foamcore & other forms of paper.
We made a one manned submarine concept for underwater exploration inspired by the looks and movements of a seahorse. It has 3 moving parts with turbines for propulsion. We came 3rd in the competition.
We started with a brainstorming of concepts and finally landed on a Seahorse Submarine concept. After taking measurements, we cut the parts, built the hull and reinforced it with cardboard.
After completing the main hull, we worked on exterior features : Wheels, Textures, Mouth. These were made using cartridge sheet & foamcore
Fianally we added some finishing touches like lights & tape to highlight some of the features. We created a tessellated texture on the front & back surfaces.
We then tested the moving parts to see if they worked the way they should.
Competition Day
Our Seahorse Submarine concept was very well received. It uses hinge joints to make the neck & head move. The movement is reminicent of the way a seahorse propells itself. We won 3rd place in the competition.
